Shack chic book cover

I have been having images swirl into crystal clarity in my head that I saw in a book 10 years ago.  Shack Chic is a book that photographically documented African shack designs, especially their interior designs.  Innovative is the word to describe these designs.  Wall paper was seen in extensive use through the township trend of design then – large sheets of tin can labels insulated the shacks and provided a decorative interior wall finish of vibrant colour.

I feel so inspired to seek out opportunities to make my house a home.  What have I got that I can use to create what I need.

These veins of thought materialized in my life today when I offered to store an artistically made room divider that some one is throwing out and that someone in a township wants.

I glean a lot from my Mother’s house.  When there is something not in use in my home I gladly hand it over to the township  - I know some one who has my old clothes, bags, cushions, furniture and it works great in her home design.

I try and make the most of my hand me downs.

I used  my quick skills that I’ve picked up in graphic design over the past weeks to make an email invite for my little man’s first birthday.  I’m a proud mom using her artistic talents to enrich the family’s life. Email invite 1st birthday

the flu has swept through my family, starting with baby. Increasing his vitamin intake through wholesome foods was reiterated as a must! Even I enjoyed his sweet potato and brocholli mix bought fresh and cooked up at home. I’m thinking of trying it as a bake or soup this winter. Flavour inspiration for kitchen creativity!

My labour for the past week is to create the graphics for a website.  I learnt more about the possibilities and what I can do for future projects.  It’s like learning your art medium (what you use ie paint, pastel etc).  I use to do Graphic design as a young teenager – hours of amusement better than any computer game to me.  Here is my work

‘Warm a winter cold’ Mince & Spaghetti

Fine Chop an onion

250g Mince

1/2tsp chili flakes

lemon juice and zest

1 tin chopped tomatoes

a little Italian seasoning

Brown onions in a little olive oil, add chili, add mince and cook through.  Add lemon juice, zest, tomatoes and seasoning.  Simmer.  I puree it to make the mince sauce extra fine.  Serve on spaghetti with a sprinkling of Parmesan if you like.

Yellow is my colour according to….http://www.truevaluepaint.com/content/Color/ColorQuiz.aspx

What a laugh!

I did it – wore yellow out of the house.  And I got compliments and thanks for wearing my national pride.  A bright blue head scarf to bring out my eyes and a little lip stick helped play down my paleness overpowered by yellow.  I was not as nearly as noticeable as I thought I would be as shop workers and owners were dressed like me in the mall.  As I braced myself to walk into the mall a gorgeous young women walked out fully clad in a track suit plastered with the entire South African flag.  If she had just walked through the mall then I would draw little attention to myself.  One man made my day by calling me “sisi” (sister) as he walked past giving me thumbs up.  The man in the pet shop even noticed that I’d dressed my little boy just like me in *Bafana Bafana support style.

*Bafana Bafana is the name of the South African soccer team

T shirt

A Friday to look forward to.  Friday’s always have a mystical side for me.  More relaxing and carefree.  I get to wear a soccer shirt for the first time tomorrow – finally joining in with my nation.  I’m excited.  The Brazil team is coming to my neighbourhood for the Soccer World Cup.  The vibe is picking up and international fans are going to get a shock when they see how artistically South African’s celebrate soccer.

A confession, I’ve never played soccer, watched soccer, or even comprehended soccer.  I’ve always thought Man United would make good dancers.

Despite my complete lack of soccer enthusiasm, I still find myself excited – not for soccer but for the cultural experience of living through the FIFA World Cup.  I’m gonna make the most of it!

I saw a sight today,
two robbins looking the other way.

Chests in full bloom
they sung their tune,
back to back in the potted garden.
